MIMAI Space
Filsen, Rhine Valley, Germany
MIMAI Space is set in a historic hillside house above the Rhine, in the small village of Filsen.
The river is part of the reason for being here. For centuries, the Rhine has carried people, languages, objects, and stories across landscapes and borders. Here, where the river bends and time seems to move at a different pace, movement and stillness exist side by side.
Before it became MIMAI Space, the house was the painting retreat of artist David Tan (*1958). His paintings remain here, and the rooms still carry the quiet of a working artist’s house. MIMAI looks after his legacy through the David Tan Collection and continues to research and share his work.
Carefully restored while preserving its domestic character, the house has gradually become a place for artistic research, writing, editing, and conversation. Artists, writers, researchers, and friends come here in connection with particular projects—to work, exchange thoughts, look through materials, or simply spend time together.
Much of what happens at MIMAI Space grows slowly: publications in development, films taking shape, encounters with archives, and conversations that continue across places and years.
MIMAI Space is neither a public venue nor a conventional residency. It remains intentionally small and personal—a place beside the river where work and everyday life meet, and where ideas are given the time to find their own form.
