TOYOKO SHIMADA, NÉE MAEDA

Pharmacist

Toyoko Shimada was born in Shanghai in 1929 and raised there. In 1945, she left Shanghai with her parents and moved to Japan. She later lived in Germany before returning to Japan in 1975.

SHANGHAI

1929–1945

Toyoko Maeda was born in Shanghai in 1929 and spent her childhood and adolescence there.

She attended a Japanese elementary school and later a girls’ grammar school in Shanghai.

In mid-1945, Toyoko left Shanghai with her parents and moved to Japan.

KYOTO

1945–1946

Toyoko continued her secondary education at a girls’ grammar school in Kyoto.

1946

She graduated from the school in Kyoto.

KOBE

From 1946

After completing her secondary education, Toyoko began studying pharmacy in Kobe.

After graduating, she worked as a pharmacist, initially for a rubber manufacturer in Osaka and later as a customs officer at the Port of Kobe.

OSAKA

1956

Toyoko married Nobuo Shimada.

1957

Their son, Shingo Shimada, was born.

TOKYO

1960–1964

The family moved from Osaka to Tokyo.

NAGOYA

1964–1972

1964

The family moved from Tokyo to Nagoya.

Their daughter, Kuniko Shimada, was born in the same year.

GERMANY

1972–1975

1972

Toyoko moved from Nagoya to Germany with her family.

1975

Toyoko and the rest of the family returned to Japan.

Her son, Shingo Shimada, remained in Germany.

KOBE

1975–1978

After returning to Japan, the family lived in Kobe for three years.

TOKYO

From 1978

1978

The family moved from Kobe to Tokyo.

Toyoko resumed her work as a pharmacist.

2021

Toyoko Shimada died at her home.
